Choosing a unit convention

Read the unit definition beside the calculator. The same everyday name can describe a different regional or industry standard. Keep the original unit and its convention with the converted value. A unit change does not determine a missing density, duration, market rate or material property.

Distance per time and navigation units

Speed is distance divided by time. Kilometres per hour, miles per hour and metres per second change both the distance scale and the time scale. Converting kilometres per hour to metres per second requires dividing by 3.6. A knot is one international nautical mile per hour, with a nautical mile defined as 1,852 metres. These relationships are useful when comparing vehicle specifications, weather reports and navigation data. The unit conversion preserves a stated speed; it does not infer the time taken for a journey unless a distance and a suitable speed assumption are also supplied.

Average speed, pace and changing motion

A speed reading may be instantaneous, averaged over a period or averaged over a route. A unit conversion does not change which type of reading it represents. Running pace, often written as minutes per kilometre or minutes per mile, is the reciprocal type of relationship and must not be converted using the same direct multiplier as speed. A journey with stops or changing speeds also needs more context than a single reading. Keep the original description alongside the converted unit so a reader does not mistake a peak speed for an average. For a travel-time estimate, state whether the speed is assumed constant.

International definitions and dimensioned drawings

The international inch is exactly 2.54 centimetres, and the international foot is exactly 0.3048 metres. A yard is three feet. These definitions make ordinary metric-to-imperial length conversions reproducible. Drawings can use millimetres for small components and metres for overall dimensions, so compare their unit headings before copying a value. A drawing scale is a different relationship from a unit conversion: converting centimetres into inches does not determine how large a printed drawing is relative to the real object. Scaled drawings need an explicit scale ratio. Historical survey measurements can also use older foot definitions, which should not be silently substituted for the international foot.

Mixed height units and nautical distance

A decimal foot value is not the same as a feet-and-inches notation. For example, the fractional part of a decimal foot must be multiplied by twelve to obtain inches; it should not be read as an inch count. Converting a mixed height requires combining the feet and inches before applying a length factor. Nautical miles are used in navigation and are defined as 1,852 metres. A knot is one nautical mile per hour and therefore describes speed, not distance. These distinctions are useful when comparing travel distances, recording personal height or reading navigation data. Choose a dedicated mixed-unit or speed tool when the original quantity requires that structure.

Checking and reporting your answer

Keep intermediate digits and round the final answer according to the accuracy of the original measurement. Include the destination unit in a report or spreadsheet header.
