Choosing a unit convention

Read the unit definition beside the calculator. The same everyday name can describe a different regional or industry standard. Keep the original unit and its convention with the converted value. A unit change does not determine a missing density, duration, market rate or material property.

Troy ounces, tola and carat weight

Precious-metal trading commonly quotes troy ounces rather than the avoirdupois ounces used in general weight conversions. One troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams. The tola convention here is 11.6638038 grams. Gemstone carat weight is a mass unit: one carat equals 0.2 grams, and one point is one hundredth of a carat. A carat of gemstone weight is different from a karat of gold fineness. A conversion from tola, grams or troy ounces changes a mass unit without determining whether the item is pure gold, silver, platinum or an alloy. Retain the metal and purity information separately from its mass.

Gross jewellery mass versus fine-metal mass

A jewellery item can contain alloying metals, stones, clasps and other components. Its gross mass is not necessarily its fine-gold mass. To estimate nominal fine-metal content, the metal mass and stated fineness are additional inputs; a simple unit conversion cannot discover either from the gross mass alone. An actual assay may be needed where composition matters. A price-per-gram or price-per-tola calculation also needs a market quotation, currency and any fees or making charges. This page does not provide a live valuation. Use the mass result as one clearly identified input in a separate calculation, and avoid treating a long decimal output as proof of the item’s composition or sale value.
