Choosing a unit convention

Read the unit definition beside the calculator. The same everyday name can describe a different regional or industry standard. Keep the original unit and its convention with the converted value. A unit change does not determine a missing density, duration, market rate or material property.

Mass, weight and scale readings

Kilograms, grams, pounds and ounces in this category describe mass. Everyday speech calls a scale reading weight, but physics distinguishes mass from gravitational force. A kilogram-to-pound mass conversion does not calculate newtons or pound-force. Converting a measured mass keeps the same amount of material while changing the numerical unit. For a kitchen scale, luggage label or shipping document, check the displayed unit before entering the number. A package may have net mass, gross mass and tare mass; converting one does not determine the others. Where a scale has a stated resolution or tolerance, carry that information alongside the converted amount.

Avoiding ounce and ton ambiguities

Avoirdupois ounces are used for ordinary mass, while precious metals commonly use troy ounces. These ounces have different masses. A pound contains 16 avoirdupois ounces; a troy pound contains 12 troy ounces and is a separate convention. Ton can mean a metric tonne, a US short ton or an imperial long ton. Do not assume that every supplier uses the same meaning. Use a tool explicitly labelled for the intended ton convention. This category does not infer which convention an unqualified ton represents. If an international shipping record does not specify its unit standard, obtain that information before using a converted mass in a contract or charge calculation.
