Choosing a unit convention

Read the unit definition beside the calculator. The same everyday name can describe a different regional or industry standard. Keep the original unit and its convention with the converted value. A unit change does not determine a missing density, duration, market rate or material property.

Distance per time and navigation units

Speed is distance divided by time. Kilometres per hour, miles per hour and metres per second change both the distance scale and the time scale. Converting kilometres per hour to metres per second requires dividing by 3.6. A knot is one international nautical mile per hour, with a nautical mile defined as 1,852 metres. These relationships are useful when comparing vehicle specifications, weather reports and navigation data. The unit conversion preserves a stated speed; it does not infer the time taken for a journey unless a distance and a suitable speed assumption are also supplied.

Average speed, pace and changing motion

A speed reading may be instantaneous, averaged over a period or averaged over a route. A unit conversion does not change which type of reading it represents. Running pace, often written as minutes per kilometre or minutes per mile, is the reciprocal type of relationship and must not be converted using the same direct multiplier as speed. A journey with stops or changing speeds also needs more context than a single reading. Keep the original description alongside the converted unit so a reader does not mistake a peak speed for an average. For a travel-time estimate, state whether the speed is assumed constant.

Energy and power describe different quantities

Energy is an amount, while power is the rate at which energy is transferred or used. Watts measure power. Watt-hours and kilowatt-hours measure energy. One kilowatt-hour is 3.6 million joules. A device rated at a given wattage does not have a fixed kilowatt-hour consumption without a duration and operating behaviour. A unit conversion from watts to horsepower can use a fixed factor because both describe power, but watts to kilowatt-hours needs time. Appliance ratings can also describe maximum, nominal or average power, so a conversion of the rating should retain that description.

Calorie, horsepower and BTU conventions

A thermochemical calorie is 4.184 joules, and a kilocalorie is one thousand calories. Food labels often call a kilocalorie a Calorie, so context is essential when comparing nutritional and physics measurements. Mechanical horsepower is approximately 745.7 watts and differs from metric horsepower. BTU values can use several historical conventions; this site uses the International Table definition where stated. Refrigeration tonnage describes cooling power rather than a mass of equipment. A numerical result is meaningful only when its convention matches the original specification. Check the qualifiers on supplier data and choose an explicitly compatible conversion.

Why area conversion factors are squared

Area is a two-dimensional measurement. If a length factor converts one side of a square, applying it to both sides produces the area factor. For example, one international foot is 0.3048 metres, so one square foot is 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304 square metres. Applying only the length coefficient to an area is a dimensional error. The same principle works for square inches, square yards and square kilometres. Shape is not changed by expressing its area in another unit. Converting the area of a rectangle does not tell you its separate width and length, because many different shapes can have the same area.

Land records and regional property measures

A hectare is 10,000 square metres. The international acre used here is 4,046.8564224 square metres. Regional land units such as marla, kanal, bigha or gaz can vary across jurisdictions or local practice. A property conversion needs the definition that applies to the actual record rather than a country-wide assumption copied from an unrelated example. Confirm whether a quoted property amount describes usable floor area, plot area, built-up area or another quantity. Converting one unit does not reconcile differences between those descriptions. When interpreting an official land document, retain the original value and definition, and follow the standard required by the relevant authority.

Checking and reporting your answer

Use a one-unit reference value to confirm the conversion direction, then compare a worked example with your own arithmetic. Keep intermediate digits and round the final answer according to the accuracy of the original measurement. Include the destination unit in a report or spreadsheet header. For work governed by a contract, protocol or technical standard, follow that document’s definition and validation requirements.
