Choosing a unit convention
Read the unit definition beside the calculator. The same everyday name can describe a different regional or industry standard. Keep the original unit and its convention with the converted value. A unit change does not determine a missing density, duration, market rate or material property.
Decimal storage and binary prefixes
Decimal KB, MB, GB and TB scale by powers of one thousand. Binary KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB scale by powers of one thousand and twenty-four. The prefixes are different labels for different unit sizes, not interchangeable spellings. A storage manufacturer and an operating-system display may describe the same capacity using different conventions, producing different numerical amounts. Filesystem metadata and reserved capacity can also reduce usable storage; a prefix conversion does not calculate that overhead. Confirm the label used by each source before comparing an advertised drive size with a displayed value.
Bits, bytes and throughput estimates
A byte contains eight bits. Network speeds are commonly quoted in bits per second, while transfer applications often display bytes per second. Mbps and MB/s therefore differ by a factor of eight when both use decimal prefixes. Capitalization helps distinguish them, but it should always be confirmed in the source. A theoretical unit conversion does not guarantee an actual download rate. Protocol overhead, latency, congestion, wireless conditions and server limits can affect measured throughput. Estimating a transfer duration needs both an amount of data and a sustained transfer rate. Keep those inputs separate from the prefix or bit-to-byte conversion itself.
Checking and reporting your answer
Use a one-unit reference value to confirm the conversion direction, then compare a worked example with your own arithmetic. Keep intermediate digits and round the final answer according to the accuracy of the original measurement. Include the destination unit in a report or spreadsheet header. For work governed by a contract, protocol or technical standard, follow that document’s definition and validation requirements.
