Fixed durations and calendar dates

Seconds, minutes and hours are fixed duration units in this calculator. A day is treated as twenty-four hours and a week as seven days. A calendar month can have twenty-eight, twenty-nine, thirty or thirty-one days, so it cannot be converted into an exact fixed number of hours without a specific calendar interval. A calendar year also depends on the chosen definition. Payroll schedules, subscription periods and dated contracts may use calendar rules rather than a simple duration factor. Converting a count of hours does not determine a calendar date or an anniversary. Use a date-aware tool when the start and end dates matter.

Time zones and mixed time notation

A duration is different from a local clock time. Local-time conversions need a location and often a date, because daylight-saving rules and historical time-zone changes can affect the offset. Similarly, a notation such as hours:minutes:seconds must be parsed into a total duration before converting it into a single unit. The digits after a colon are not a decimal fraction of an hour. This page expects a numeric amount in the labelled source unit. For schedules or time sheets, retain the original notation and confirm whether a value describes elapsed time, billed time or a local timestamp before converting it.
